Biography

I swore I would never teach. My parents were both in
education, and I wanted something more glamorous for my own
life. As a high school student, I planned a career in journalism,
hoping to write stories that would change the world. In college, I
decided to pursue creative writing instead. I followed this
course, receiving a BFA in creative writing from the University of
Maine at Farmington. Eventually, I began a masters program in
fiction writing at New Mexico State University. It was then that I
began to doubt the career path I had chosen for myself.
I began to reconsider the old vow that I would never follow my
parents into teaching. When I had the opportunity to present
writing workshops in elementary schools, I knew that a change
was in order for me.
I began teaching middle school language arts in Bullhead City,
Arizona in 2001.  When I walked into the classroom for the first
time, I had never taken a single class in education. I was an
expert in writing and nearly an expert in literary studies, and I
expected that students would recognize and respect my
authority. I was under the illusion that knowledge of a subject
was enough to make one a good teacher. Over the next few
years, I completed a masters degree in secondary education.
After teaching for five years in Arizona, I returned home to North
Dakota, taking a position at New Town Middle School. I am
currently teaching English in New Town High School's freshman
academy program.
