Scope: World Literature, Native American Literature, Literary
Analysis, Composition and Rhetoric

Instructor Goals:
  • To engage students in the process of interpreting and analyzing literature from a variety of historical and cultural
    contexts.
  • To help students gain confidence in their abilities to
    understand, interpret and respond to a variety of texts.
  • To prepare students for college-level reading and writing
    experiences.


Please note that the following schedule is subject to change
throughout the year. Units may be shortened or lengthened
and projects/assignments may be added, removed or altered
based on the needs and interests of each group of students.

Daily:

Bell work: Students will write journal responses to
questions/prompts written on the board.

Grammar Time: The class will spend five to ten minutes per day
discussing/practicing the formal grammar required for writing in
standard American edited English. Activities will include sentence
diagramming, writing class sentences, and focus on specific
grammatical issues as determined by instructor.

Weekly:

Genres: Each  week, students will be asked to read one
contemporary essay and compose a written response evaluating the
author’s use of literary and/or rhetorical devices.

Quarter 1:

Week 1: Personal introductions, negotiation of classroom contract,
introduction to daily activities, review of syllabus

Week 2: History of the written language, introduction to narrative
writing, introduction to the

modern society. Begin reading
